Iconic fountain on Belle Isle closed after flooding damages electrical components

BELLE ISLE, MI – An iconic fountain at Michigan’s Belle Isle Park is closed for repairs after a pipe failed, and the resulting flooding damaged electrical components.

The James Scott Memorial Fountain has been closed since mid-July. It is expected to reopen at the end of August, according to a news release from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

“The James Scott Memorial Fountain is one of the more iconic attractions in the park,” said Thomas Bissett, urban district supervisor for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division. “We’re working as quickly as we can to get the fountain back in operation so visitors can enjoy this historic landmark.”

In mid-July, a shut off valve on a 4-inch water pipe failed, causing flooding in the underground mechanical tunnel, the release said. The water damaged several newer electrical components related to the fountain’s circulation and filtration systems.

DNR staff pumped out the water and dried out the area, the release said. Electricians are working on repairs. Some of the parts are not available for several weeks.

Belle Isle Park, a 982-acre island park located on the Detroit River near downtown Detroit, is home to the James Scott Memorial Fountain, Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, the Belle Isle Aquarium, a golf range and other attractions. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, bicycling, kayaking and swimming.
